LOAFERS: THE PERFECT FUSION OF STYLE AND COMFORT.
For as long as I can remember, loafers have held a special place in my heart.
Be it Penny, Horsebit, Tassel, Kittie, Driving, Slipper, Boat or Espadrille loafers, I love them all.
So much so that when it comes to my shoe collection, loafers account for a large percentage of footwear in my possession.
They’re my go-to shoe and, in my opinion, the ultimate style hack for those who want to look good without sacrificing comfort.
But how did loafers come to exist?
Legend has it that in the 1930s, travellers from across Europe stumbled upon Norwegian fishermen rockin’ some seriously cool slip-on shoes.
Then, unable to resist their allure, visiting Englishmen quickly noticed loafers and integrated them into their clothing repertoire.
However, it’s said that the global rise of loafers is largely due to a Norwegian shoemaker named Nils Gregoriusson Trevenger.
During his time in North America, he drew inspiration from Native American tribes, particularly the Iroquois who wore Moccasins, and created the iconic “Aurland Moccasin”.
From there, the popularity of loafers skyrocketed and they were quickly incorporated into female fashion albeit with one key difference: loafers for females have shorter toes.
Make no mistake about it though, they still perfectly complement shorts, jeans, slacks, capris, dresses and skirts.
And hey, loafers aren’t just for us everyday folks. Historically, even the royal family are fans.
Rumour has it that back in the mid 1980’s the legendary Wildsmith Shoes made a loafer fit for a king – literally!
The “Wildsmith Loafer”, a house loafer, was apparently crafted for none other than King George VI himself.
So there you have it.
Loafers are a must-have – stylish, snug and with an awesome backstory.
Don’t be afraid to slip into a pair no matter the occasion.
Their timeless nature will always present you well.
