VISIT SRI LANKA: MY JOURNEY BACK TO PARADISE
After five years, I finally stepped foot on Sri Lankan soil again.
It’s where I spent the first 30 years of my life and where I developed the discipline, values and standards that I carry with me to this day.
For this reason – and because a lot of my close friends and family still live there – I feel quintessentially Sri Lankan despite having lived Down Under for nearly two decades.
That’s why I was thrilled to visit again in March, accompanied by my mother.
They say the best journeys take you home and this near four week trip was no exception.
Departing from Melbourne on the national carrier Sri Lankan Airlines, who have now introduced direct flights to Colombo, we were treated to their customary great hospitality and amazing food.
Soon after touching down in Sri Lanka, or Ceylon as it was once called, I quickly remembered why I rate Sri Lanka as one of the most amazing places in the world.
Once partially possessed by the Portuguese and then the Dutch, Sri Lanka eventually became a colony of the British Empire.
As a result today the country is a melting pot of cultures, influenced by all three colonial powers, as well as the Middle East and Asia due to its location on the ancient Silk Road route.
Another factor that sets Sri Lanka apart from other destinations is the people. They are the friendliest, generous and kindest humans on Earth.
There’s also several Unesco World Heritage Sites on hand to explore such as Galle, Polonnaruwa, Dambula, Kandy, Sigiriya (pictured) and more!
Add to the equation beautiful beaches (Mirissa Beach pictured) and tasty cuisine and Sri Lanka’s truly a gem.
Pack your bags like we did and head there for your next adventure.
Your soul will thank you later.
