IT'S TIME TO SHOW SOME LOVE TO BROGUE SHOES!
Emerging in the early 19th century in Britain, Brogue shoes are today widely considered a must-have in the wardrobe of any fashionista.
Originally created for outdoor or countrywear purposes, Brogues are perfect footwear for both business and pleasure.
Hence why they’ve maintained popularity – due to their ability to add elegance and uniqueness to any outfit depending on occasion.
Deriving the name from the Irish and Scottish terms Gaeilge brog and Gaelic brog, Brogues are a specific type of low-heeled shoe or boot.
By definition they’re “characterised by multiple-piece, sturdy leather uppers with decorative perforations and serration along the pieces’ visible edges”.
Adorned by four patterns called Oxford, Derby, Ghillie and Monk, there are also four separate styles of Brogues.
First up are Full Brogues, which are also affectionately known as wingtips.
Stylistically, they feature a painted toe cap with extensions running along both sides of the toe to the end of the foot.
Next we have Semi-Brogues – or Half Brogues which they’re also called.
The Gentleman’s Gazette describes them as shoes that “have a toe cap without extensions or wings and feature broguing both along the cap’s edge and sides”.
Another derivative of the style is the Quarter Brogue.
Recognised as the most formal Brogue, they’re characterised by a toe cap with decorative perforations and serrations only on the cap’s edge.
The final design within the Brogue catalogue, which once upon a time fielded incredible popularity in the United States of America, is the Longwing Brogue.
Featuring wings that engross the full length of the shoe to meet at the centre seam of the heel, they were so in vogue in the USA that they gained the nickname “American Brogues”.
As you can see from the photos I’ve included in this post, I’m a big fan of Brogues and rock them as often as I can.
And given their history, elegance and classic nature, to me Brogues perfectly embody timeless fashion.
