AN ODE TO MY MOTHER, MY NUMBER ONE

AN ODE TO MY MOTHER, MY NUMBER ONE

One of my core values is the importance of family.

My mother is my rock, protector, travel companion, role model and inspiration.

Many moons ago, as a secondary school student in Sri Lanka, she was even my teacher for a few years!

We should have known then that if we could make it through that experience still as close as ever, nothing in the years to come would impact our close connection.

It’s that bond – as well as her trademark resilience – which saw us through tough times, especially when dad passed away and made her a widow at the age of 48.

As I grow older, I continue to cherish every moment my mother and I are together.

I long for the evenings where we share a kitchen and I play sous chef and prepare the ingredients for her famous chicken curry.

Hearing her call me ‘’mage putha’’ – which in our native Sinhalese dialect translates to ‘’my son’’ – instantly fills my heart with comfort and security.

Watching and helping her create fashion designs, crocheting and embroidery, leaves me in awe of her seemingly endless talents.

Seeing the way that we both love entertaining guests and listening to music always reinforces to me that I truly am my mother’s son.

I’m blessed to have such a creative, strong, sensitive and down to earth woman in my life and it doesn’t have to be Mother’s Day for me to express my feelings.

But just in case she ever forgets, I’ll say it here so that it’s left on the internet forever: mum, I love you and you’re the most important person in my life.
